Restoring Harmony and Balance

By: Stephen Waller
Did You Know?
•More than 7 million accidental poisonings occur each year, with more than 75% involving
children under age 6! (Source: The Columbia University College of Physicians &
Surgeons)
•The federal Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has found that airborne chemical
levels in homes were as much as seventy (70) times higher inside than outside.Scare-
mongering this is not.
When I first heard these facts I was simply appalled and bewildered that we allow
ourselves to live like this. In an age where conditions such as asthma and cancer are so
commonplace, how come we do not look straight towards the cause and eradicate it?
For a long time I was of the view that cleaning products have enriched our lives and
bought a higher standard of living and a longer average lifespan; true to an extent. Soap
is one of the most significant inventions the human race has ever dreamed up. It has
brought cleanliness into our lives and has helped to reduce the spread of common
diseases across much of the world. But we did not stop at soap.
The US market for household cleaning products was worth US$14.3 billion in 2003. As this
lucrative market becomes saturated, companies resort to new, more effective cleaners,
containing an increasing number of toxic chemicals, to steal market share from rivals. But
at what cost to us?
•Of the 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% have
been adequately tested for the negative effects on our health. (Source: “Neighbourhood
Network’s” 2002 Environmental Resource Directory for Home and Business)
•According to a National Academy of Sciences workshop, approximately 15 percent of the
American population suffer from chemical sensitivity. Researchers have traced this
increased sensitivity to the proliferation of synthetic chemicals in consumer products and
furnishings.
The more of these facts I came across, the more I started to look for an alternative, and
so I stumbled across natural cleaning products that are both safe for you to use and
environmentally friendly. These products contain no dyes, artificial fragrances or pesticide
residues. They use only citrus-based oils as well as ingredients from corn and other
replenishable materials.
Tap Water
According to a study done by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality
Engineering, published In the American Journal of Public Health, 29 to 46 percent of
water pollutant exposure (depending on the chemical and the concentration) occurs
through the skin in children, and 50 to 70 percent occurs through the skin in adults! In
addition, the EPA has now identified chloroform released from hot, running shower water
as an air pollutant- so there's a hazard in breathing water, too!
The EPA has identified more than 700 pollutants that occur regularly in drinking water,
both from municipal sources, and from water taken directly form the earth through wells
or springs. At least 22 are known to cause cancer; it is not known exactly how many
pollutants are carcinogenic, since not all have been tested.
The most common water pollutants are the trihalomethanes or THM's, the most
common of which is chloroform. THM's are formed when chlorine used as a
disinfectant combines with the natural organic matter in the water. According to the
EPA, THM's are present in virtually all chlorinated water supplies in the United States.
Chloroform can cause liver and kidney damage and central nervous system depression,
and is a suspected human carcinogen.
The second most common water pollutant is fluoride. It is added to many water
supplies as a public service, to reduce dental cavities in children. Much controversy has
surrounded the use of fluoride, because large amounts of it can weaken the immune
system and cause heart disease, genetic damage, birth defects and cancer.
